Pope Francis wants Vatican City – the world’s smallest country – to join UEFA, but should it?

Not once since 1972 has Vatican City’s national team won a match.

They have only ever played nine matches against a senior team from another country in their entire history, but the fact remains Vatican City are still searching for their first official victory.

Despite this, it’s possible the tiny micro-state could one day sit at international football’s top table. Pope Francis is lobbying for Vatican City to join UEFA. 

The thought of Vatican City, with its population of just 800 people living in the shadow of St. Peter’s Basilica, taking on Europe’s best might seem farfetched, but its national team has a surprising history.
