It could go down as the week Arsenal’s grip on the Premier League trophy started to slip. But points and goals can’t quantify the real damage of the last week. It goes much deeper than that.

For Arsenal, this season belief has played as much a part in their impressive start as anything else. That new ethos at the club could be traced back to the record £42.4 million signing of Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day. It was a transfer that reassured everyone at Arsenal that they still held a position in the European elite and could still operate at the very top of the market.
